There he was. I finally got a chance to see him in short distance. He was walking slowly across my neighbor’s yard toward my driveway. My neighbors had told me about how he would wonder through the neighborhood and sniff around for foods. He looked rather skinny. And he seemed to be walking with an absent mind. I stood in silence and watched he moved closer and closer to me. Finally, when he was only about three or four steps away from me, he noticed me. Raising his head, he stared right at my eyes. For a few seconds, we both stood there in silence and looked at each other.
As I looked at him, a thought came through my mind…. If I were ten years younger, I probably would have reacted very differently. I might keep a distance away from him. Or, I might try to drive him away from my house. Now that I am old, I have learned to live in peace with everyone. Well, make that almost everyone. Suddenly, an idea struck me. He might be thinking what I was thinking… if he were few years younger, he might want to show me who was the true boss of this neighborhood. But, we both are now too old to engage in any competitive sport.
He slowly turned around and then walked down my driveway and wondered through my backyard. I watched his back and thought: Good luck, old fox. Wish you find a good meal for yourself and your family.
