A study shows that 25% of Japanese men between the ages of 30-39 have yet to pop their cherry.
TOKYO — A 2010 survey by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research has shown that 25% of middle-aged men between the ages of 30-39 were still virgins. In fact, there’s such a population of them that a specific term has been coined for them in Japanese -- ‘yaramiso’.
And the numbers only seem to be on the rise when compared to similar earlier studies.
Some are blaming Japan’s flagging economy as men are struggling to find secure full-time jobs, making them more eligible on the marriage market. Others blame the lack of education about how to build healthy relationships and how to approach women.
Yet social pressure to pop their cherries also cripples virginal men and the pressure only gets worse year after year.
One such 40-year-old virgin, Mr. Sakatsume, runs a non-profit group White Hands. The group aims to help disabled individuals find an outlet for their sexual needs and has recently begun catering to able-bodied individuals whose attitudes towards sex is a barrier holding them back.
White Hands now offers lectures on how to find a partner and how to establish an emotional and physical relationship.
