如果我們想要其他人去做某件事情，我們應以身作則。
當看見我們做了某件事情，他們也會跟著做，
如果他們認為這件事情值得去做的話。
如果我們只是告訴他們該怎麼做的話，
他們會覺得我們很煩，一直在對他們囉嗦，
最後的結果就是他們不會想做我們叫他們做的事。
固定在文件上的訂書針事實上是可以回收的，
所以我們應在把不要的文件拿到紙類回收箱前把訂書針拆下。
然而，大部分的人不會這麼做，直接把它們丟入紙類回收箱，
這麼做的結果就是讓可回收的訂書針變成垃圾。
在辦公室，我希望我的同事可以養成拆下訂書針的習慣。
我知道如果我直接告訴他們這麼做的話，
基本上，他們不會接受我所給他們的建議。
因此，當他們沒有把訂書針拆下就把文件丟入紙類回收箱時，
我會把它們拿起來，在他們的面前把訂書針拆下。
幾次之後，有些人就開始養成拆下訂書針的習慣，
雖然還有是些人依然我行我素，至少有些人改變了行為。
照片中的訂書針是經過好幾年累積之後的成果。
當訂書針的數量累積夠多的時候，它們就變成被回收的資源。
如果很多人養成把垃圾變成回收資源的習慣，
資源回收的效率就可以獲得大幅度的改善。
如果你希望人們做某些好事，不要直接用言詞說服他們，
你應該把言詞轉化為行動，為他們以身作則。
不可否認地，你無法改變他們所有人的行為，
但是至少你可以讓他們有些人的行為被改變。
同樣的道理，如果你已經是為人父母或是老師，
而你希望你的子女或是學生好好地用功讀書，
請不要直接用言詞來告訴他們應該要這麼做。
你應該以身作則，並且證明學習是一種樂趣，
看見你樂於學習，你的子女或學生自然會主動用功讀書。
Actions Speaking Louder than Words
If we want others to do something, we should try to make a good example for them. When seeing us doing something, people would also do it if they think it deserved to be done. If we just tell them what they should, they would feel bothered and think we keep nagging them. All as a result, they would not do what we tell them to do.
Staples binded to documents in fact are recyclable, so we should remove them away from documents when we put unwanted documents into recycling box for papers. Nevertheless, most people would not do it, and just put unwanted documents into recycling box for papers directly, which would make recyclable staples become waste.
In the office, I hope my colleagues could get into the habbit of removing staples from unwanted documents. I know if I tell them to do it directly, basically they would not follow my advice. Several times later, some of them start to get into the habbit of removing staples from unwanted documents before put them into recycling box for papers. Although there are still some people still picking up where they left off, at least some people have changed their behavior.
The staples in the picture are the results of accumulation for many years. When the amount of these staples accumulates large enough, they could become recycled resources. If many people get into the habbit of changing waste into recycled sources, the efficiency of resources recycling could improve a lot.
If you want people to do something good, do not try to persuade them into doing it in words. You should transform words into actions and make a good example for them. There is no denying you cannot change the behavior of all of them, but at least you can make the behavior of some people changed.
Likewise, if you are parents or teachers and you want your children or students to study hard, please do not just tell them to do it. You should try to make a good example for them and justify learning something makes you have a lot of fun. Seeing you enjoying learning something, your children or students would take the initiative to study hard. |
