I like listening to Don McLean s songs. I particularly like enjoying his music at nights. Listening to his songs in the dark and sipping a cup of coffee, I would let him take me onto a journey. However, when listening to American Pie, I would feel like watching a collection of unrelated video images.... can see every piece but cannot make out what they mean. Even so, it is an addictive song. I can listen to it several times back to back without feeling bored.
At first, I thought I did not understand this song because of language barrier. Then, from discussing it with my American colleagues, I realized most Americans also have no idea what this song is about even though it has been a popular song since it was released in 1971. Don McLean is not much a help. He has consistently refused to explain the lyrics. He once said "You will find many interpretations of my lyrics but none of them by me".
Do we really need to understand how and why an artist creates a piece of art in order to appreciate it? I guess not. When I go to an art gallery, I don t know all the stories about the displayed paintings, sculptures and so on. Still, I can have a good time by taking in the images and, sometimes, the sounds. I will be naive and happy.... like a baby tasting ice cream... no idea what it is but certainly taste good in mouth.
Life is not a science. Logical interpretation is not an essential condition for joy and happiness. Too bad... it took me years to learn something so basic. Now, I shall pause.... and go back to listen American Pie one more time.
