篇名: 當藝術家相遇

What do you think about when you hear the name Vincent van Gogh? It was 1967, young Donald Richard McLean went to an art gallery. From all the paintings inside, van Gogh’s “The Starry Night” caught all of his attention. This art work touched him so much that he couldn’t help but to compose a song in memory of this painting. The correct name of this song is “Vincent,” but most of us will recite it as:

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul

Mclean then was a “nobody” singer in a night club, he sang this song with his guitar. And because the melody and content of the lyrics was too beautiful, a famous singer, named Roberta Flack, found herself loving this song so much. Later, with the help of well known songwriters, Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel, Flack released the song “Killing Me Softly with His Songs” in her album “The Score.” In this song, she vividly recorded the moment she encountered “Vincent.”

I heard he sang a good song
I heard he had a style
And so I came to see him
To listen for a while
And there he was, this young boy
A stranger to my eyes

What do you think about when you hear the name Vincent van Gogh? Take out a piece of paper and a pen, jot down what is in your mind, and maybe you will be another great songwriter!
