One day, after reading on this chapter I went to buy a big pizza of Naples .

Most agree that pizza came from the Mediteranean region .

The first pizza may have appeared as early as the Stone Age .

The pizza we know today probably really did come from Naples, Italy .

Tomatoe sauce was used as a topping on flatbread by the poor in Naples .

With this simple addition to an ancient treat, the modern pizza was born .

Until the late 1800s, pizza was sold mostly by street vendors .

The first pizza Margherita in 1889 : used red tomatoes, white cheese, and green basil .

By the 1900s, pizza was in the United States .

Thanks to Italian immigrants and

American soldiers returning from World War II spread the fame of this Italian export .

Their love for this delicious dish quickly spread to friends and family .
