A robotic renaissance for surgeons is produced by the company Intuitive Surgical .

Surgeons use a console to operate the 4 mechanical arms of the da Vinci robot .

Three of these arms are reserved for medical tools, such as scissors and scalpels .

The primary objective of the da Vinci System is to enable doctors to perform Minimally Invasive Surgery .

Compared with traditional open surgeries, MIS requires smaller incisions into the patient s body .

The system has been used chiefly for cardiac valve repair, gynecological procedures, and prostatectomies .

This robots can be found in hundreds of hospitals worldwide and have helped to perform approximately 200,000 surgeries to date .
