We all know that food for flies is the same as food for humans. When you are eating something outdoors, you would attract flies to come. At the beginning, you would be in an elated mood because the food is very delectable. Nevertheless, your elated mood might be spoiled by flies because your food is so luscious that it attracts the attention of flies. What you like to eat is also what flies like to eat. Therefore, flies are flying and circling around you, waiting to have a chance to get a bite of your food.
However, you might not know flies also suck nectar. One day I spotted an extraordinary phenomenon in Taipei Botanical Garden. Flies were sucking nectar at certain plant, called霞山大戟. Before, I only saw butterflies or bees sucking nectar, but I had never seen flies doing the same thing. Maybe this kind of nectar is tasted like the food of humans, so it attracts the attention of flies. I think next time I should try to eat something near this plant to see whether flies would be distracted by the food I am eating. Then I can know which one flies like more, food of humans or nectar of this plant?
